Carl Lewis Chief instructor Sifu Carl Lewis is a black belt in Wing Chun Kung Fu, Full instructor in JKD under Tim Tackett/Bob Bremer/Jim Sewell and instructor in JKD grappling under Sifu Larry Hartsell. Carl started his journey in martial arts at the age of 10, in 1975, when he decided, on his mother's advice, to take up the combat sport of Judo. His first teacher was a local Judo legend, Graham Wright, and Carl stayed with this art until, at the age of 17, he joined the British Tia Chi Chuan and Shaolin Kung Fu Association. Carl used this art to solidify a base in the trapping range, and enjoyed such a level of success that he became the first (& youngest) Welsh person ever to achieve the grade of "Black Sash" in 1987.It was during this year that Carl was first introduced to the art which would shape his live thereafter, Jeet Kune Do (JKD). Carl attended a seminar featuring the amazing Dan Inosanto &, like most knowledgeable martial artists, was thoroughly impressed by Guro Inosanto's level of skill and understanding. Carl threw himself totally into the art of Jeet Kune Do, and attended as many of the relevant seminars as possible. His relationship with Sifu Larry Hartsell began in 1989, and continued a year later when he travelled to the United States to train with a number of prominent martial artists, including Guro Dan Inosanto, Larry Hartsell, Bert Poe and Master Chai Sirisute.Sifu Hartsell gave Carl the permission to teach in 1991, & Carl has been a successful self-employed Martial Arts/Self Defence/Fitness instructor ever since. Despite having amassed a considerable amount of knowledge over the past quarter of a century, Carl still insists on training as often as possible, attending a number of seminars every year. He has been privileged enough over the years to have trained with an impressive collection of martial artists, some of these being Guro Dan Inosanto, Sifu Larry Hartsell, Sifu Rick Faye, Rick Young, Tim Tackett, Jimmy Demille, Bert Poe, George Dillman, Master Chai Sirisute, Master Chan and Hoyce Gracie.Carl has a formidable level of skill in all ranges of combat, but considers himself particularly proficient in the grappling range, a range in which he was actively participating in & researching into long before it became as fashionable as it is today. Carl is an avid believer in choke techniques, & has used a variety of chokes to great effect in both training & 'live' environments (most commonly during his time working in nightclub security).
Carl is also a fan of pad work, using focus mitts & thai pads religiously in both his own training & his public classes to increase fitness & sharpen 'tools'. Carl proves his prowess on the chin up bar ! Aside from his interests in martial arts and fitness, Carl involves himself in a considerable amount of charity work, & always insists on his students taking part in an annual event for charity. His most recent charity works include a 4-hour chin-up marathon (where he managed an impressive 1312 chin-ups!), a collection of fun runs (where 'fun' translates as 13 miles!), & a 3-peaks challenge, which he and Wez managed to complete in 19 hours and 20 minutes! Carl has recently been involved in a charity demonstration in aid of hope house together with some of his students and instructors demonstrated the awesome power of Jeet Kune Do and the Blending of different arts helping to raise over £700. Carl has completed a 10 offas dyke walk walking the English Welsh border and is currently planning our next "Camp" on the costal town of Barmouth. In Feb of 2006 Carl invited Sifu Tim Tackett to hold a 2 day seminar which Carl's Scimitar Martial Arts Students attended. Sifu Tim was so impressed by Carl and the level of tuition Carl has given to his students, Tim affiliated our own Scimitar Martial Arts with his Wednesday Night Group and promoted Carl to Associate instructor Skipping the 1st two grades Carl is the only instructor in Wales to be authorized to teach JKD by Sifu Larry Hartsell and Sifu Tim Tackett.Carl likes to relax with trips to the countryside, since he has a passion for hillwalking. He is a very sociable person, and is always ready to entertain with the array of magic tricks he's perfected over the years.Carl currently teaches students from his converted garage at home in North Wales, finding he gives better instruction on a more personal bases rather than in large classes
